Bruins fall to Mohawk in volleyball season opener

Sheridan’s men’s volleyball team were defeated by Mohawk Mountaineers 3-1 in the Ontario College Athletics Association season opener Oct. 31.
Mohawk also proved to be a challenging start to the season for the Lady Bruins who were downed in a trio of sets.
Returning Bruin Josh Butler produced 13 kills and three blocks alongside veteran teammate Jeremy Fantin, who earned himself 14 kills and two blocks.
In the opening set, the Bruins kept it close throughout, but Mohawk pulled away late to take a 1-0 lead scoring 25-20.
Sheridan came out on top in the second set scoring 25-23, thanks to Fantin’s bullet spikes to put them in the lead.
Mohawk’s Bradley Regier was productive on the serves in the third set. Regier was responsible for 16 kills and two blocks, as the Mountaineers scored 25-16 to down the Bruins and put them ahead 2-1.
The Bruins kept the margin short during the last set, ahead 17-16. But Mohawk wouldn’t let up, dominating their serving game and taking the win 25-21 to top off the match at 3-1.
Meanwhile, Mohawk triumphed 3-0 over the Lady Bruins.
Sheridan was outperformed early on by Mohawk, who took a 10-point lead and ended the first set 25-15.
The Lady Bruins were downed by 6 points in the second, falling 25-19.
Kaitlin Gagnon came up with 12 digs for Sheridan, returning the court with Eva Crncovik who produced five kills and four digs. Recovering crucial plays would shorten the differential in the second set, but the Mountaineers were able to put themselves ahead 2-0, thanks to Mohawk’s Julie Gagnon who totaled 11 kills, as well as 10 digs.
The Lady Bruins made a statement in the third set forcing Mohawk to win by 2. Sommer Maltby showcased three serving aces, five kills and 12 digs. Teammate Jordie Bevan earned herself 7 kills and 9 digs. Defensive blocks in the third would help to keep Sheridan in the game but Mohawk swept the Bruins 3-0, ending the final set scoring 26-24.
