Gone are the days when nostalgia lovers could sit back and watch reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Sabrina the Teenage Witch over and over again. Well, there’s Netflix, but we all know it’s not the same. There are no new episodes, and while watching your favourites is all good and well, we have questions.
My question, for the longest time, was who the hell Rory Gilmore ended up with.
If you were like any young girl in the mid-2000s ,you remember Gilmore Girls like I do.
You know “Where You Lead” off by heart, and can sing it whenever you hear it.
You fought endlessly for Luke and Lorelai to finally live happily ever after like they were always meant to, and cheered for Hep Alien as much as any of the Gilmores did when they performed.
Stars Hollow was your home.
MORE RELATED TO THIS:
You loved all of the characters: Miss Patty and Babette filled your heart with dreams of what you could be when you were older and wiser. Taylor Doose and his “relationship” with Luke Danes were inspiration for your own diner rivalry.
But Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, after two seasons of madness. The creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband left the crew but the show kept going, leaving viewers confused as the story left its usual regime. Gone were our pop-culture quips that left all our heads reeling, and in came April Nardini.
It was Gilmore Girls, but not quite the same. So no one was surprised when it ended, but everyone was sad.
And then the great gods of Netflix gave us the blessing, nearly 10 years later, that we’d all been waiting for.
Gilmore Girls was returning.
Not only that, but we were being handed gold in Gilmore Girls: Seasons.
It wasn’t just Rory and Lorelai, but nearly the entire cast was returning. Miss Patty, Paris, Luke, Jackson, Michel – everyone you can think of.
Save for two notable exceptions: Richard Gilmore and Sookie.
We understand Richard’s absence, as Edward Herrmann’s death was not easily forgotten by fans. His death is acknowledged in the upcoming episodes, as well, as the show begins four months after his death.
Speculation still spins around Sookie, who was a vastly important member of the cast. Melissa McCarthy’s busy schedule was first to blame, then a lack of invitation to be on the show. Fingers are still drumming though, as Yanic Truesdale just grabbed dinner with her according to his Instagram.
Who knows? Maybe she’ll find time for a cameo as our favourite clumsy chef.
We’re being given four episodes: each of them around 90 minutes, and featured around seasons, which would explain the name.
The first episode is called “Winter”, but from there things get murky.
We’re not too sure what we’re going to be looking at: cast has increased to include children (Davey is 13 now!), and includes returns to places like Chilton Academy.
Sherman-Palladino has confirmed that all our Gilmore ladies, Emily, Lorelai and Rory will start the season all at crossroads, and has hinted that someone will be getting a new love interest.
And on that note, and my big question since I was 14, Dean, Jess and Logan are all returning to the cast (my insides are screaming, and I’m grabbing my Jess Mariano sweatshirt, but let’s get back to the topic).
The only other portents we’ve been given are that there is going to be a hippie commune, and a few new characters on set. Kids, but also a few new adults (new Stars Hollow residents, or something more?). It’s been 10 years, so it’s hard to determine what we can read into, but we’ve got a while to wait.
There’s still no timeline for when these episodes will be released to the public, though Sherman-Palladino has explained that she doesn’t want all the episodes being released at once. The woman likes to see us suffer, obviously.
But nine years of waiting has prepared us for this.
I’ve got my ‘la la la’s’ ready to be practiced, my coffee pot at the ready.
Kirk-Cat and I are willing to wait, as if there are anyone’s hands I trust Gilmore Girls in, it’s the creators.
