How do you reach out to fellow residents, and make friends?

Living in residence can be a difficult thing for people who are away from home. What takes away that feeling is having a good support group of friends. But, what if someone is shy? Or feeling awkward? Unwilling to take the first step?

If a student wants to make friends in residence, the most important thing for that student to do is to step out of their comfort zone.

As difficult as it is to do that, here are some helpful tips to help you get started:

  • Attend the events being hosted by Residence, such as the Thanksgiving Dinner. Those events are usually an opportunity for students to socialize with others.
  •  Host your own events, such as a movie night or a pool tournament. One can do this by posting on the Sheridan Residence Facebook page, or to your own Facebook page.
  •  Or simply make small talk when you have the chance, such as when someone is riding the elevator. Small talk may be a small step, but it is a step. Start with a simple hello. Then move up to a slightly bigger thing, such as ping pong.
