As of January, municipal governments in the Region of Peel launched their new waste cart policy. It involves the axing of old disposal practices and the introduction of new critter proof bins for garbage, recycling and organic waste to over 300,000 homes. As of last year, Peel recorded that they handle more than 500,000 tonnes of waste per-year, which is produced by 1.3 million residents, including 102,097 tonnes of recyclable items and 33,396 tonnes of organic green.
With new bins comes great responsibility. There is a new pick up schedule as well. Organics will be picked up weekly to prevent lingering smell, while the recycling and garbage bins will be picked up every two weeks in rotation.
